How to Fax Multiple Files at Once

Send up to 10 files as one fax on unofax. Mix PDFs, Word documents and photos, put them in order, and pay once for the total page count.

One Fax, Several Documents

A lot of faxes are really a bundle: a signed form plus a copy of your ID, a referral letter with test results attached, a rental application with payslips and a bank statement. On unofax you can upload up to 10 files and send them together as a single fax. There is no need to merge PDFs first, and the files do not have to be the same format. A Word document, a PDF and a couple of phone photos can all go in the same transmission.

The recipient gets one fax with every page in the order you chose, you pay once, and you receive one delivery confirmation for the whole bundle.

How to Send Multiple Files in One Fax

  1. Open unofax.com on your computer or phone. No account is needed.
  2. Add your files. Drag several files onto the upload area at once, or click browse and select more than one in the file picker (hold Ctrl on Windows or Cmd on a Mac to pick several). On a phone you can choose multiple files from Files or Photos.
  3. Add more if you need to. Once the first files are in, use Add another file to bring in anything you missed, up to 10 in total. On a phone this is also how you add a second or third photo taken with the camera.
  4. Put them in order. Files are faxed from top to bottom in the list. Use the up and down arrows next to each file to change its position, and the remove button to take one out.
  5. Enter the fax number and, if you want one, fill in the free cover sheet.
  6. Preview every page. unofax converts all of the files into one fax document and shows you exactly what will be sent, in order, before you pay. Check that nothing is sideways, cropped or out of sequence.
  7. Pay and send. The price is based on the total number of pages across all files. After payment the fax goes out straight away, or at the time you picked if you scheduled it.

Limits for Multi-File Faxes

Limit Value
Files per fax Up to 10
Size per file Up to 100 MB each
Pages per fax Up to 300 in total across all files (the cover sheet does not count)
Formats PDF, Word (.doc, .docx), PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP, HEIC and TIFF, freely mixed

If you try to add an eleventh file, or the files together come to more than 300 pages, unofax tells you before you pay so you can remove something or split the job. See the supported file formats guide for how each format is converted.

What Order Do the Pages Arrive In?

The fax is built in a fixed sequence:

  1. The cover sheet, if you added one, is always the first page.
  2. Then every page of the first file in your list, in its original order.
  3. Then every page of the second file, and so on down the list.

Pages inside a file are never reshuffled, so a 12-page contract stays in the order it was written. If the recipient needs a particular order (for example the signed form before the supporting documents), arrange the list before you continue to the preview. The preview is the final word: what you see there is what the fax machine on the other end prints.

What It Costs

A multi-file fax costs the same flat per-page rate as any other fax, charged on the combined page count. Three files of 2, 5 and 1 pages is an 8-page fax. There is no extra fee for sending more than one file, and the cover sheet is free whether you send one file or ten. See the pricing guide for the current per-page rate.

Because it is one fax, it is also one delivery. If the recipient's line is busy, unofax retries the whole fax automatically for up to 24 hours, and if it still cannot be delivered you get a full refund for every page. You will never end up with half of your documents delivered and the other half stuck.

One Fax or Several?

Sending everything as one fax is usually the better choice, but not always.

  • Send one fax when all the documents go to the same fax number and belong together, such as an application and its attachments. The recipient receives them as one continuous transmission behind a single cover sheet, which makes them much harder to separate or lose.
  • Send separate faxes when the documents go to different fax numbers, when they need to arrive at different times, or when the total is over 300 pages. A long document can be split into parts and sent as consecutive faxes; mention "part 1 of 2" on each cover sheet so the recipient knows to expect the rest.

Tips for a Clean Multi-File Fax

  • Use PDF where you can. PDFs keep their layout exactly. Word documents are converted automatically, but a PDF export gives you full control. Our Word to PDF guide shows how on every device.
  • Scan paper, don't just photograph it. A proper scan gives a flat, high-contrast page that faxes cleanly. The scanning guide shows how to do it with the free Notes app on an iPhone.
  • Remove blank pages before uploading. Every page is charged and printed at the other end, blank ones included.
  • Remove passwords. Password-protected PDFs cannot be converted, so open and re-save them without protection first.
  • Use the cover sheet message to list what is enclosed, for example "Signed application (2 pages), passport copy (1 page), payslips (3 pages)". It helps the recipient confirm everything arrived.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fax a PDF and a photo together?

Yes. Formats can be mixed freely. Every file is converted to fax format and joined into one document, so a PDF, a Word file and a JPG from your phone can all go in the same fax.

Do I need to merge my PDFs before uploading?

No. Upload the files as they are and arrange them in the list. unofax combines them for you. Merging first still works if you prefer, but it is no longer necessary.

Can I change the order after uploading?

Yes. Use the arrows next to each file to move it up or down. The order in the list is the order the recipient receives.

Does each file get its own cover sheet?

No. A multi-file fax has at most one cover sheet, placed at the very front, followed by all of your files.

Will I get a confirmation for each file?

You get one confirmation email for the whole fax, because it is delivered as a single transmission. It lists the pages sent and serves as your proof of delivery. More on that in the delivery status guide.

What happens if one file is too large?

Each file can be up to 100 MB. A file over that limit is not added, and the rest of your files stay in the list. Compress or split the large one and add it again.
