Why merge files before faxing?
A fax is one continuous transmission, so the recipient gets a single stack of pages. Merging lets you control the order and catch missing pages before you send.
Fax machines print in black and white at about 200 dpi. Color highlights, light pencil and faint scans can disappear. The fax preview shows you what survives so you can rescan or darken a page first.
Many fax machines and online services limit how many files you can attach. One merged PDF gets around that.
Faxing online? You don't need to merge anything first: unofax takes up to 10 files, joins them in order and adds a free cover sheet.
