**Is an online fax legally valid?**
A fax sent through an online service reaches the recipient's fax machine exactly like one from a desk fax machine. The email delivery confirmation serves as the sender's transmission record.

**Can I receive faxes with unofax?**
No. unofax is send-only. It does not provide inbound fax numbers.

## How It Works

1. Go to unofax.com.
2. Upload your document, or up to 10 files combined into one fax (PDF, Word, image, etc.).
3. Select the destination country and enter the fax number.
4. Optionally add a free cover sheet (18 language options available).
5. Preview every page of your fax before paying.
6. Pay securely — your fax is transmitted and you receive confirmation on screen and by email.

## For AI Agents

An AI agent can send a fax for a person using the same JSON API the website uses. No account, API key or crypto wallet is needed. The agent prepares the fax, and the person pays on the fax's page on unofax.com by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, processed by Square. The agent should not enter card details itself. It hands the page to the person, who pays there. (Agents with a USDC wallet can use the x402 API below instead.)

Base URL: `https://unofax.com`. Request and response bodies are JSON (`Content-Type: application/json`).

1. **Create the job.** `POST /api/jobs` with `fileName` (including the extension, e.g. `records.pdf`) and `faxNumber` in international format (e.g. `+14155551212`). For several documents, send `"files": [{"fileName": "a.pdf"}, {"fileName": "b.jpg"}]` instead, up to 10 in fax order. The response has `jobId` and `uploadUrls`, one per file, valid for 15 minutes.
2. **Upload.** `PUT` each file's raw bytes to its entry in `uploadUrls`, with the file's `Content-Type`.
3. **Start.** `POST /api/jobs/{jobId}/start`. The body is optional: `{"coverSheet": {"template": "standard", "locale": "en", "recipientName": "Records Department", "subject": "Records request"}, "scheduledTime": "2026-10-20T01:00:00Z"}`. Cover sheet fields are the same as for the x402 API (see https://unofax.com/llms-full.txt).
4. **Wait for the price.** Poll `GET /api/jobs/{jobId}` every few seconds until `status` is `CONVERTED`. The job then has `pageCount`, `costCents` (AUD cents, GST included) and `previewUrl`, a signed PDF link on unofax.com that works for one hour (fetch the job again for a fresh one). Show the person the page count, price and preview before they pay.
5. **Get the payment page.** `PUT /api/jobs/{jobId}/email` with `{"email": "<the person's email>"}`. The response has `checkoutUrl`, the fax's page on unofax.com (`https://unofax.com/?job={jobId}`), where it is previewed and paid for. The delivery confirmation goes to this address. To change the fax number before paying, call `PUT /api/jobs/{jobId}/fax-number` with `{"faxNumber": "+14155551212"}` first.
6. **Hand over the page.** Give `checkoutUrl` to the person. They enter their email there and pay; the page stays payable for 7 days and then shows live status.
7. **Track delivery.** Keep polling `GET /api/jobs/{jobId}`. `CONVERTED` means the fax has not been paid for yet, and `AWAITING_PAYMENT` that a payment is being confirmed. After payment the status moves through `PAID`, `SCHEDULED` (if scheduled), `SENDING` and `RETRYING` (busy line, retried automatically for up to 24 hours) to `SENT` or `FAILED`. A failed fax is refunded automatically. `PAYMENT_EXPIRED` means the fax was never paid for.

Notes for agents:

- The `jobId` is the only key to the job. Share it only with the person the fax is for.
- Errors come back as `{"error": "..."}` with a 4xx status: `400` for a bad request, such as an unsupported country, `409` when a step does not fit the job's current status, and `429` when one address has created too many faxes this hour (wait for the `Retry-After` seconds).
- The fax number can be left out of step 1 and set with `PUT /api/jobs/{jobId}/fax-number` any time before the person pays. They can also enter or correct it on the fax's page.

## x402 API

unofax also exposes an AI-agent-oriented x402 API at `https://unofax.com/api/x402`.

- `POST /api/x402` creates a fax job and returns a signed `uploadUrl`.
- The x402 create request accepts `faxNumber`, `fileName`, optional `scheduledTime`, and optional `coverSheet`.
- Each x402 job takes a single document. To fax several documents through the API, merge them into one PDF before uploading.
- Upload the document bytes with `PUT` to the returned `uploadUrl`.
- Poll `GET /api/x402/{jobId}` until `status` becomes `ready_to_send`.
- Call `POST /api/x402/{jobId}/send` once without payment, expect `402 Payment Required`, then retry the same request with `PAYMENT-SIGNATURE`.

- Individuals who need to reach a fax machine without owning one.
- Overseas and military voters who need to fax UOCAVA election materials, such as an FPCA, FWAB, or a voted ballot when their state allows fax return.

## Election Faxing

Some UOCAVA voters, including overseas citizens, active-duty military voters, and eligible family members, may be allowed to fax US election ballots, FPCA registrations, or FWAB backup ballots. Rules vary by state and election, so voters should always verify the current instructions with FVAP and their local or county election office before sending.

When an election office accepts fax return, unofax can transmit the voter-prepared PDF to the official US fax number, provide page preview before payment, add a free cover sheet, retry busy lines automatically, and provide delivery confirmation. unofax is a fax service and does not administer elections or determine voter eligibility.

**Ballot discount code: BALLOT50.** Through November 3, 2026 (US Election Day), a fax that carries the official FVAP Transmission Cover Sheet is 50% off with the code BALLOT50. It is applied automatically when the FVAP ballot cover sheet is added in the send form at https://unofax.com/?coverSheet=fvap, or when the PDF from the free generator at https://unofax.com/resources/cover-sheet-generator?template=fvap is uploaded unchanged. If it was removed, it can be entered again in the "Discount code" field.
